Diet (Aahara) is given prime importance in Ayurvedic therapeutics. Aahara is given emphasis in Ayurveda as it provides nourishment to body, mind and soul and helps in growth and development of our body. Life style disorders (LSDs) are booming worldwide due to intake of unhealthy foods, sedentary lifestyle and stress due to busy life. Diabetes mellitus, obesity, cardio-vascular diseases, hypertension, asthma, cancer and others are some of the LSDs. Diet mentioned in the Ayurvedic literature for prevention of LSDs are searched; and emphasis has been given for planning and following proper diet for LSDs. Ayurvedic texts were searched for Ahara, Ahara Vidhi, Pathya-Apathya for diseases. Recent publications were searched through engines with the words- life style diseases, causes, prevention, diet. 11 Ayurvedic book chapters, 09 articles on diet for LSDs, 08 articles on Ayurvedic diet and lifestyle for LSDs, 05 articles on lifestyle for LSDs, and 07 articles on prevention of LSDs were referred. The LSDs are major cause of death nowadays. These LSDs can be prevented by healthy food habits and regular exercise. Disease specific list of wholesome and unwholesome food items are mentioned in Ayurveda. The daily and seasonal regimens, and proper diet planning according to Ayurveda may be the answer for prevention of these LSDs.

Introduction
Planning for proper diet is an essential part for better management of the diseases. Diet is the most important and essential factor for prevention and cure of diseases. Proper diet has been given utmost importance in Ayurvedic system of medicine for management of diseases; for this reason, diet is termed as best medicine (Mahabhaishajyam).[1] Disease specific lists of wholesome and unwholesome foodstuffs are mentioned in Ayurveda.[2] A right diet helps to control many diseases like diabetes mellitus, cardio-vascular disease, obesity and others. For controlling the diseases, proper and nutritious food, safe drinking water and adequate physical exercise are considered as the proven measures. According to Acharya Charaka, Aahara (food) is defined as such articles which are consumed daily for maintenance of good health and for prevention of diseases.[3] Food is the source of energy, balancing the daily activities of life; hence it is referred as ‘Prana’ (life force).[4] Food by virtue of its distinct characteristics features like source, energy, texture, flavor and smell is capable of exerting a specific effect on our body and mind. Some dietary rules play a major role in prevention of diseases as well as for promotion of health. Following a proper diet can restrict the lifestyle disorders by keeping the body and mind active and healthy.[5] India becomes hub of the lifestyle disorders (LSDs). LSDs are very common nowadays due to intake of junk foodstuffs, sedentary lifestyle, wrong postures, altered biological clock and stressful conditions. LSDs are a group of diseases also known as non-communicable diseases (NCDs). It includes diabetes mellitus, hypertension, obesity, hyperlipidemia, chronic low back pain, various depression, malignancies and others.[6] It is always better to prevent these lifestyle disorders rather than treatment after occurring. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported 41 million annual deaths due to NCDs, which is equivalent to 71% of total global deaths. 17.9 million deaths occurred due to cardiovascular diseases, followed by 9.3 million due to cancers, 4.1 million due to respiratory diseases and 1.5 million due to diabetes mellitus.[7] Proper diet plan is essential to prevent the lifestyle disorders. The diet mentioned in the Ayurveda may be proved as boon to get rid of the LSDs. Ayurveda always emphasizes prevention of the diseases. Two main components for preventive purposes are diet and lifestyle. Following proper diet and lifestyle regimen mentioned in Ayurveda can be beneficial for maintaining disease free healthy life. Lots of do’s and don’ts are mentioned in Ayurveda regarding prevention and management of diseases. A proper diet has been planned from those do’s and don’ts mentioned in Ayurveda for prevention of the LSDs in this article.
Methodology
Texts of Ayurveda like Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Kasyapa Samhita, Astanga Hridayam, Sharangadhar Samhita, Bhavprakash, Bhaishajya Ratnavali and others are searched for Ahara, Ahara Vidhi, wholesome and unwholesome diet and lifestyle for diseases. The guidelines from Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, Central Council of Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) and the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding diet and lifestyle for LSDs were searched. The reputed search engines like Goggle Scholar, PubMed, and others were searched with the keywords i.e. diet, lifestyle diseases, diet and diseases, diet for lifestyle diseases, prevention of lifestyle diseases and others. The obtained articles were analyzed critically for gathering information on diet and lifestyle for LSDs. Total 12 articles on diet for lifestyle diseases, 14 articles on Ayurvedic diet for lifestyle diseases, 09 articles on prevention of lifestyle diseases, and 08 articles on lifestyle for lifestyle diseases were downloaded. After critical analysis of the Ayurvedic texts and the downloaded articles, 11 Ayurvedic chapters, 09 articles on diet for LSDs, 08 articles on Ayurvedic diet and lifestyle for LSDs, 05 articles on lifestyle for LSDs, and 07 articles on prevention of LSDs were referred in this article.
Ayurvedic concept of diet
Ayurveda provides a detailed description of various aspects of diet for understanding its importance in maintenance of health, prevention and cure of diseases. Acharya Charaka states that the utility of ideal diet for an individual can be determined with the help of eight factors i.e. nature (Prakriti) of the food: it is the innate attribute of diet such as black gram lentils are heavy but green gram lentils are light to digest; methods of processing (Karana): results in transformation of innate attributes of articles by various means like dilution, application of heat, cleansing, churning, storing and others; combination (Samyoga): two or more substances combine to form specific properties; quantity (Rashi): it is considered in two ways, quantity of total food or quantity of individual food items; habitat (Desha): the source, growth, movement or adaptation of the individual as well as the food source; time (Kala): it stands for seasonal regimen as in summer season intake of sweet, cold and liquid food is indicated; rules of use (Upayoga Samstha): denotes the rules governing the intake of food and depends on parameters of proper digestion, pure belching, enthusiasm, timely elimination of urine and feces, lightness of body, feeling of hunger and thirst at proper time after intake of food; and the user (Upayokta): the one who takes the food is responsible for wholesomeness of food by the virtue of its habitual intake.[8] Habitual intake of harmful things in improper ways is harmful but when adopted properly it becomes useful.[9] A list of proper and improper food items according to Ayurveda is given in Table 1.Table 1:

A balance diet in Ayurveda
Ayurveda has been giving prior importance to food, its types, source, method of preparation, it’s impact on well- being along with the ways and means by which it can be consumed to obtain maximum benefits for betterment of health and prevention of diseases.[10] Ayurveda takes into consideration the Agni (digestive power), Vaya (age), Kostha (bowel habit), Desha (habitat), Kala (season), Avastha (state of mind) and Prakriti (constituent of food as well as of individual) to recommend a balanced diet.[11] Acharya Charaka has mentioned a balanced diet that includes Shali-Shashti rice (a variety of rice matures in 60 days), Godhuma (wheat flour), Yava (barley flour), Mugda (green gram), Amlaki (Phyllanthus emblica) fruit, Ghrita (ghee), Madhu (honey), Godugdha (cow milk), Jangala Mamsarasa (meat juice of arid animals), Saindhava Lavana (rock salt powder) and Antariksha Udaka (rain water); it is shown in Figure 1. This balanced diet is mentioned to be consumed on daily basis.[12]
Lifestyle disorders: Causes
Today, there is surge of LSDs globally mainly because of altered food habits, reduced physical activities and more stressful living. The LSDs can affect all the age groups, from children to elderly. Due to more of urbanization, busy lifestyle, easily availability of packaged foods and drink, people are becoming more prone to the attacks of several diseases. In present era, LSDs are increasing at alarming rate due to unwholesome diet and lack of physical activities in form of packed food, junk food, refined food, frozen food, aerated or carbonated drinks, prolong sitting and sedentary living. Practicing these faulty measures build up more space for anxiety and depression leading to affliction of mental factor as well and leads to production of various diseases of body and mind.[13] Tobacco chewing, smoking, alcohol drinking and drug abuse are some of the other leading causes for LSDs. Obesity, type II diabetes mellitus, cardio-vascular diseases, hypertension, asthma, backache, lung cancer, anxiety are some of the LSDs.[14] Intake of more fat and sugars, lack of exercise, sedentary lifestyle, stress and poor sleep are some of the causes for obesity.[15] Physical inactivity, overweight, tobacco are causes for diabetes mellitus.[16] Smoking, tobacco chewing, inactivity, alcohol intake, unhealthy diet are the causes for cardiovascular diseases.[17] Lack of exercise, smoking, more salt intake, drinking much alcohol and coffee and lot of stress are the causes for getting hypertension.[18] Smoking, more stress, frequent changes of temperature are some causes of asthma.[19] Lack of exercise, excess body weight, smoking, faulty postures, long sitting are causes for backache.[20] Tobacco chewing, alcohol consumption, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity are common causes for cancer.[21]
Prevention of LSDs
Good diet and habits from early childhood can prevent the LSDs. Parents could educate the children for good diet and lifestyle practices. Following the right path from the childhood can have impact on life of people later. The lifestyle and food habits of the children have been changed for the last two decades. Children are now become sedentary due to more use of computer and mobile phones and less playing habit in ground. They are taking more fast and junk foodstuffs, which contain more salt, sweet and oils. The children can be taking out from these lifestyle and food habits by proper training of playing habits, routine exercise, and training on consumption of healthy foodstuffs. A study reported that a school based lifestyle programmes and food habits can have a positive effect on the modification of lifestyle habits in children for meeting the lifestyle challenges.[22] Healthy eating, regular physical activity, avoid drinking much alcohol, avoid smoking and tobacco chewing and enough seep will help to prevent the LSDs. Eating more green vegetables, fresh fruits, and fiber rich foods, switch to whole grain flour, limiting consumption of oily foods, replace junk foods with healthy snacks and drinking plenty of water are some of the diet keys for prevention of LSDs. A regular walk in the morning or evening, taking the stairs instead of elevators, playing with kids at home, doing regular household works at least for half an hour are some physical activity related tips. And any type of addiction like alcohol, smoking, tobacco chewing or drug must be avoided.[23]
Diet and diseases
Diet has been given prime importance for prevention and cure of diseases in modern science too. Modern science advocates a balance diet and regular exercise for maintaining a healthy body. A healthy and balance diet is considered as important factor for maintaining overall health and for prevention of chronic diseases. And a weak and unhealthy diet can cause various health risks. Diet with low healthy diet index (HDI) is proved to be associated with higher risk for occurrence of hypertension, arrhythmia and obesity. Annually, 7.94 million deaths and 188 million disability occurred globally among the adults in 2019 due to faulty dietary habits.[24] A study reported that a balance diet and regular exercise can improve the insulin sensitivity and can induce changes in body composition in adolescents with severe obesity.[25] Simultaneous obeying a healthy diet and an active lifestyle can prevent the risk of life style disorders.[26] Taking plenty of fruits and leafy vegetables reduce risks of occurring cardio-vascular diseases, cancer and obesity. Replacement of refined grains with whole grains and limit in sugar intake could be beneficial to prevent cardio-vascular diseases, type-2 diabetes mellitus, obesity and metabolic syndromes. Restriction in sodium intake can reduce risks of cardio-vascular diseases. Replace of trans and saturated fats with mono and poly saturated fats including N-3 fatty acids is beneficial to prevent cardio-vascular diseases, type-2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndromes.[27]
Modern diet for LSDs
A balance diet is always the need to combat the LSDs. It is a challenge for the nutritionist to plan for a balance diet. A balance diet will maintain balance in carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals; it will be composed of green vegetables, grains, cereals, fruits and spices. In a balanced diet, a wide variety of selected vegetables, fruits, cereals, spices and minimally processed foods would be expected to help maintain the body mass index (BMI) within limits and reduce the risk of a range of LSDs.[28] The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends diet with high amount of grains, legumes, vegetables, fruits and nuts, and less amount of salt, sugar and fats. Daily salt consumption should be less than 5 g. Amount of sugar intake should be less than 10% of total energy intake. Fats with saturated fatty acids and trans fats should be reduced in the diet. Enough of foods with dietary fibre like oats, whole grains and others should be taken. The recommended diet will be helpful for prevention of LSDs including cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity, some types of cancer and others.[29]
Functional foods
Functional foods are the designer foods processed by incorporating the raw food items rich in disease preventing supplements. The modern science is always keen to develop food items favourable for the patients of life-style disorders or useful for prevention of life-style diseases. The development depends on planning of food items, modification of the raw items and processing of the final products. Planning involves combination of the supplements for specific diseases; the raw food items are modified genetically enrich with functional supplements; and processing includes fermentation, and others for functional foods.[30] For example, cardio-vascular diseases (CVD) are one of the life-style diseases responsible for almost 20% of total annual death worldwide. Diet with high saturated fat content is considered as one of the leading causes for CVD. The disease is directly correlated with high serum cholesterol, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein (LDL) and low serum high density lipoprotein (HDL) levels. A diet with less fat content and high antioxidant, vitamins, polyphenols, carotenoids and others is favourable for the patients of CVD. Food items with such nutritional values may be designed for prevention of CVD and for consumption to the patients of CVD.[31]
Ayurvedic concept of lifestyle disorders
Ayurveda emphasizes on the three basic needs of the body for staying healthy; those are known as ‘Traya Upastambha’ i.e. three basic supports for healthy leaving viz. Aahara (food), Nidra (sleep), and Brahmacharya (control over senses). Food gives strength and nutrition, which is essential for growth, development and maintenance of the body. Sleep is needed for proper functioning of the body and mind. Adequate sleep brings refreshments, helps in combating stressors. Control over the senses is essential to maintain the eternal peace. Proper growth of an individual depends on eternal peace.[32] Disobey of the principles of these three basic supports of the life leads to imbalance in body homeostasis, which causes occurrence of the LSDs. Intake of excess fatty junk foodstuffs, inadequate sleep due to work pressure and stress, smoking, chewing tobacco and consumption of excess alcohol come under disobey of the three basic support. Ayurveda has always given importance on prevention of the diseases, rather cure. The daily regimen by the name of Dinacharya, and the seasonal regimen by the name of Ritucharya are mentioned in Ayurveda. Obeying of these regimens properly is called Sadvritta (good habits). Following these regimens helps in maintenance of health and prevention of the diseases. Proper food and lifestyle are mentioned in Ayurveda for prevention of the diseases. It is mentioned in Charaka Samhita that the strength and complexion of a person will be proper, who know and follow the suitable diet and seasonal regimen.[33] It is mentioned in the texts of Ayurveda that following the daily regimens and the seasonal regimens properly are the keys for prevention of LSDs. Early awakening, brushing, avoid natural urges, oil pulling, exercise, oil massage, bathing, early sleeping and others as daily regimens; avoid of day sleep except summer, avoid direct sunlight during summer, avoid winds, avoid cold foodstuffs, use of seasonal foods and vegetables and others as season regimens are mentioned to be followed. Practice of good habits (Achara Rasayana), use of immunomodulation (Rasayana) therapy are also mentioned as preventive measures for LSDs; emphasis has been given for taking proper diet.[34]
Ayurvedic diet for LSDs
The disease specific wholesome and unwholesome diet chart is described in the ancient Ayurvedic texts. From those diet lists, easily available and affordable foodstuffs are mentioned here for prevention of different LSDs. People suffering from Madhumeha (diabetes mellitus) are advised to avoid Kapha predominant Aahara such as curd, sugarcane, jaggery, sweet taste; and to include more of bitter and astringent foodstuffs in the diet like Patola (Trichosanthes dioica), bitter gourd (Momordica charantia), Nimba (Azadirachta indica), Methika (Trigonella foenum-graecum). Wheat, horse gram, leafy vegetables, garlic, point gourd, cardamom, lemon, hot water are indicated for asthma; and fried foodstuffs, fish, mustard leaf, curd, cold foodstuffs are not indicated.[35] For obese people, ginger, garlic, pointed gourd, bitter gourd, drumstick and buttermilk are advised to take; and cold water, freshly prepared wine, potato and curd to be avoided. Coriander, carom seeds, honey, ginger, radish, point gourd, long piper are advised for patients of cardio-vascular diseases; and salts, alkalis, excess bitter, astringent and sour foodstuffs are avoided. For prevention of hypertension, drumstick leaves, bitter gourd, bottle gourd, turnip, carrot, radish, Indian gooseberry, cucumber, grapes are advised; and excessive intake of salt, excessive intake of oil, butter, ghee to be avoided.[36] The details have been mentioned in Table 2.

Discussion
There is a basic difference in concept of modern dietetics and Ayurveda Aahara. Modern dietetics counts everything on the account of the nutritional values of the diet. So, the modern science has given more importance on the nature of the food articles (Dravya); whereas, Ayurveda considers both the properties of food article (Dravya) as well as the digestive capacity (Agnibala) of the patients equally important. For example, pulses are considered as good source of proteins in modern science and all pulses contain more or less equal quantity of proteins. But in Ayurveda, Masha (Phaseolus radiatus Linn.) is considered as difficult to digest (Guru) than Mudga (Phaseolus mungo Linn), which is easy to digest (Laghu); and Mugda Yusha is considered a better diet than Masha Yusha.[37] Nidanam Parivarjanam (avoid the basic causes) is the primary management principle for diseases in Ayurveda, this simply means causative factors for diseases should be avoided. Ayurveda mainly focuses on three types of Nidana (cause) namely, Aaharaja (food related), Viharaja (physical activities and regimens) and Manashika (mental afflictions) for the diseases. Correction of all these three factors is the basic need for prevention of diseases. Acharya Charaka has defined ‘Pathya’ (foods during illness) as one of the synonyms of ‘Chikitsa’ (treatment), it is also considered that wholesome regimen of ‘Aahara’ (food) and ‘Vihara’ (lifestyle) plays a major role for promotion of health and prevention of diseases.[38] Thus, planning of proper diet is essential for both diseased and healthy individuals for promotion of health. Nutrigenomic studies can help us understand how genetic makeup responds to nutrition in terms of the transcription and translation processes. It also provides an opportunity to determine dietary requirements based on an individual’s genetics and can help in recommending personalized diets for individuals which can help in prevention and management of diseases. Nutrigenomics brings in new techniques of experimentation, which gives rise to a new perspective in the field of research in nutrition.[39] This field requires an interdisciplinary effort, so that diet becomes healthy as well as easy and tasty to consume. It is certain that we cannot alter the genes human beings have inherited, but we can try and change how genes respond to the dietary environment.
