Abstract:

Since Vedic Period Prameha (asrava) & its different types especially Madhumeha (Diabetes Mellitus) as a life style disorder are disturbing the human era. Plants and plant extracts were used to combat the disease as early as 1550 B.C. with as many as 400 "prescribed" before the development earlier this century of effective medications to control diabetes. In this paper an attempt has been made to give an overview of certain Indian plants with their phyto-constituents and mechanism of action which have been studied for their antidiabetic activity. Ayurveda describes number of plants used as herbal drugs play an important role as alternative medicine due to less side effects and low cost. The active principles present in medicinal plants have been reported to possess pancreatic beta cells regenerating. insulin releasing effects and fighting the problem of insulin resistance. Herbal drugs viz. Vijaysara, Haridra, Rasone, Yava, Amalak. Azadirachta-indica, Momordica charantia, Aegle marmelos etc. are accepted & claimed in Ayurveda for cure of Madhumeha.

Introduction:

Madhu meha (a type of Prameha) which has been correlated with  Diabetes Mellitus has become a global problem in spite of advances in modern science. India has been projected by WHO as the country with the fastest growing population of Diabetic patients. The ancient Indian physicians described not only the sweetness of urine as one of the major symptoms but also the relationship of the disease with disturbance of the 5 sheaths of the body annamaya kasha (Food sheath), pranamaya kosha {Energy sheath), manomaya kosha (Mind Sheath), vijnana maya kasha (Intellectual Sheath) and anandamaya kosha (Bliss Sheath).

All classical texts describe Prameha. The word Prameha derived from the root mih sechane means watering that means dilution of everything in the body not only urine. The statement rightly said in Ayurvedic literature since the Vedic period & the American Diabetes Association's Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes presently states that:"Diabetes is a chronic illness that requires continuing medical care & on-going patient selfmanagement education & support to prevent acute complications & to reduce the risk of long-term complications. Diabetes care is complex and requires that many issues, beyond glycemic control, be addressed."

Discussion –

Recently, medicinal plants and its derivatives have been used as an alternative to allopathic medicine in many countries as appropriate hypoglycemic agents. Either as a nutrient or as a source of food these herbs are being consumed by the patient as well as healthy person.

The vast majority of cases of Diabetes fall into two broad etiopathogenic categories. In one category, type I Diabetes, the cause is an absolute deficiency of insulin secretion. In the other, much more prevalent category, type 2 Diabetes, the cause is a combination of resistance to insulin action and an inadequate compensatory insulin-secretary response. In

Diabetes, hyperglycemia generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), which in turn cause lipid per oxidation and membrane damage and these free radicals play an important role in the production of secondary complications in Dabetes Mellitus (Kidney, Eye, Blood Vessel & Nerve damage). Antioxidants have been shown to prevent the destruction of 8- cells by inhibiting the each oxidation chain reaction and thus they may provide protection against the development of Diabetes. Plants contain natural antioxidants (Tannins, Flavonoids, and Vitamins C & E etc.) that can preserve B- cell function and prevent diabetes induced ROS formation. In this present review article an attempt was made to list out the herbal plants possessing Antidiabetic activity by one or the other possible mechanisms.

Basis of Madhumeha (Diabetes Mellitus) treatment:
